6. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Vox pop – Peter de Albuquerque, local resident:
“What makes the carnival so popular in Brazil, is just the difficult life the Brazilians have. Life continues being difficult and because of that we have to celebrate more, because that’s our escape from that chaotic reality.”

Thousands of people attended the Heaven on Earth street party in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, as part of the annual carnival celebrations.
The revellers jumped, danced and sang away as they followed the music played by a band through the streets of Brazil’s second largest city.
The outbreak of the Zika virus, the political crisis and the failing economy did not stop the locals from attending the country’s largest party.
The Carnival celebrations kicked off on Friday and go on until 10 February.
