Shinjuku is one of the most famous metropolitan cities in Tokyo. It is also a great place to grab some drinks with friends. However, there are a few areas that can be a little dangerous if you don’t know what to look out for. Kabukicho, Shinjuku’s Red Light District and home of the Robot Restaurant, is one of those areas. Kabukicho is an area filled with bars, restaurants, host and hostess clubs, as well as love hotels. Kabukicho’s name came from the late 40’s plan to build kabuki theater in that area, that while was not built, the name stuck. One of the dangerous things about Kabukicho is the “kyaku-hiki” or pulling in of customers by staff of hostess clubs and certain bars. There are a few clubs and bars that will overcharge for drinks, have hidden fees, or worst case scenario slip drugs into your drinks. While this is a rare occurance, it does happen and can cause some real problems for those that cannot speak Japanese. Kabukicho isn’t all bad, but if you do end up there just make sure to be careful.
